Immigration Bill Clears Test Vote in Senate

WASHINGTON, June 26 — A bill to overhaul the immigration system, all but given up for dead two weeks ago, cleared a crucial test vote in the Senate today, bolstering its chances for passage by the Senate within days.

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez gave the thumbs up before a vote on Capitol Hill on the immigration bill.

The senators voted, 64 to 35, to invoke cloture, or move to consideration of the bill itself. Since 60 votes are required for cloture, and only 45 voted for cloture two weeks ago, the measure’s supporters were heartened by today’s vote. Had the cloture vote failed today, the bill would have been dead for the foreseeable future.

The Senate’s next step is to consider a batch of amendments, some designed to be easier on illegal immigrants, some meant to be tougher. The amendments’ differing intentions underline the fragility of the coalition behind the bill.

Another make-or-break cloture vote could come before this weekend, and it is by no means certain that those who voted for cloture today will vote for the bill itself.

“This bill puts 12 million people on a pathway to legalization,” said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic majority leader, who pulled the bill from the floor on June 7 after a previous attempt to invoke cloture received only 45 votes.

President Bush repeatedly urged Republican senators (only seven of whom had voted for cloture the first time) to give the legislation another chance. Mr. Reid, who was sharply criticized for pulling the bill, relented and said he was willing to take it up again.

Many conservatives, both in Congress and across the country, have vowed to block the legislation, which calls for the biggest change in immigration law in more than 20 years.

Putting 12 million people on “a pathway to legalization,” as Mr. Reid put it, is anathema to a number of conservatives, who say the idea amounts to amnesty, even though the bill’s supporters have emphasized that the pathway to legalization would be open only to those who pay penalties and go to the back of the bureaucratic line.

Mr. Bush was optimistic before today’s vote and pledged that the White House would stay involved. “Our view is, if the status quo is unacceptable, we need to replace it with something that is acceptable and have been working toward that end with both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate,” he said. “We’ll be moving our attention to the House when the Senate passes a comprehensive piece of legislation.”

“I view this as an historic opportunity,” Mr. Bush said, reiterating a favorite theme: “Our spirit is invigorated when people come here to realize the blessings of America.”

Mr. Reid said the White House must deliver about 25 Republican votes to ensure Senate passage of the bill. “This is not a Democratic bill, it’s the president’s bill,” he said.

On the cloture roll-call today, 39 Democrats joined 24 Republicans and an independent in voting to take up the bill again. Twenty-five Republicans, nine Democrats and an independent voted no.

The president and Senate supporters of the bill say it would go a long way toward securing America’s borders, helping illegal immigrants without granting them amnesty and organizing a guest-worker program that would benefit American businesses while helping immigrants. The bill’s opponents, including many Republicans conservatives, contend that it would grant amnesty no matter what its supporters say, and would not do enough to protect security.

Even if the Senate does pass an immigration bill, it will have to be reconciled with whatever measure the House passes. Putting together enough support for a bill in the House could be at least as difficult as it has been in the Senate, a political fact underscored by Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican minority leader.

“There are large numbers of House Republicans who have serious concerns about the Senate bill,” Mr. Boehner said today. Just hours before the Senate vote, the House Republican Conference took up a resolution declaring that it disapproved of the Senate bill. The measure lost, 83 to 28.

The Senate debate before today’s cloture vote followed the lines that is has for weeks.

“It may not be perfect,” said Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts and a key backer of the bill. But over all, he said, it is “a good bill” and perhaps the last best chance for a long time to fix a broken system.

But a prominent critic of the bill, Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, urged his colleagues to “slow down and read this bill.” If Americans knew what was really in it, he said, they “could be forgiven for doubting the commitment of the federal government” about border security.

Esse fashion show foi organizado pela Sâmara, foi um dever de casa da faculdade Nyack e evento do ministério Project Action, que faz projetos sociais.
Nós, os jovens do JAMP, desfilamos com roupas doadas pelos membros da igreja. Após o Fashion Show todos os outfits foram vendidos e o dinheiro arrecadado foi mandado para ajuda missionária em Brasília Teimosa. Benção! Essa idéia envolveu toda a igreja de modo descontraído e com o objetivo de arrecadar dinheiro para missões. Arrecadamos aproximadamente $600, glória a Deus!

Luz no mundo!

Mateus 5:13-16 - Sou luz do mundo.

Estava apagada. Gritando por socorro. Querendo o colo do Papai celeste.

Porém, tem muita luz brilhando ao meu redor. E quando deixamos a nossa luz brilhar, nós inconscientemente motivamos outras pessoas a fazerem o mesmo. Porque pessoas são como velas, não podem se acender sozinhas.

Amigos brilhando. Me acenderam.

Ju brilhando: "Todas as coisas ocorrem para o bem daqueles que amam a Deus." (Rm 8:28) "...e o sangue de Jesus Cristo, seu Filho, nos purifica de todo o pecado." (1 João 1:7)

Mãe brilhando: "Os passos de um homem bom são confirmados pelo Senhor, e ele deleita-se no seu caminho. Ainda que caia, não ficará prostrado, pois o Senhor o sustém com a sua mão." (Sl 37-23-24)

Fomos na casa dela depois da igreja essa Domingo pra encher a barriga com um almoço que ela supostamente teria feito...eu sinceramente acho q ela recebeu uma ajudinha básicaaaa pra fazer aquele bife à parmegiana, ok ok..ela no maximo colocou o queijo em cima, só pra nao falar q nao fez nada hauahuaua to brincandoooooo

Norman Rockwell Art

Norman Rockwell. A name unknown for me until a couple of weeks ago. As I searched online for a nice puzzle to buy, put together, frame, and hang in my bedroom wall, I discovered Norman Rockwell's art in puzzles. And it caught my eyes right away. His paintings give me an innocence feeling. It brings out memories of moments I've lived or sensations I had. It's fun to look at this painting I posted, for example, and realize that thoughts of reading the doctor's credentials once came to my mind when I was a girl, but I lacked the courage to stand up and actually read them, to make sure the doctor is reliable, as this boy is doing. Such a great painting! It makes me smile, I love things that makes me smile.
Norman Rockwell makes art out of daily situations in Americans' life in a fun and fascinating way.

I was also very surprised when, reading at wikipedia.com, I found out that Norman Rockwell lived in New Rochelle, my town! He lived right here when he was about my age. There is a museum in Stockbridge, MA of many of his artwork. I'm planning on going visit it during summer probably. I'm sure I'll love it!

I'm trying to save money. Yep! Gotta pay taxes soon. Need money for school and I will/must go somewhere nice for summer this year. So I analyzed my expenses, summed up my income and guess what? The simple true: way too many expenses. So let's CUT IT!!!

Google.com, my best source for any questions and concerns, gave me some answers on how to save money.

However, some people actions speak much louder than my words on this saving-money matter. This guy, for example, didn't have money to buy furniture for his apartment, but as you see he did make his own furniture out of FedEx boxes. Gotta save money, ha?! Easier said than done!

If I could...

If I could I would leave everything and go out to Africa or Greece as a missionary. If I could I would get into a Bible School or University and spend my days learning about God, talking about Him, knowing His heart, listening to His voice...If I could I would be braver, more audacious, and talk to people about Salvation through Jesus whenever I can.

I feel so little. So insignificant. So sinful. I know God used people who were mere sinners, common human beings to do extraordinary things. I know I will never ever actually feel capable or worthy to do anything that big, but God can certainly use me. But how? It seems to me that the only way I could do things for God would be to stop working, stop focusing in the things of this world and focus on the things that are eternal, right? I mean, I rush so much every morning to go to work that I almost don't have time to read the Bible and pray. I'm so worried about bills, and health, and school, and trying to figure if it's really worthy staying here without my family or not...I keep on trying to fight against bad habits and thoughts and attitudes that I know are not pleasing God. I keep on trying to tell God how important it is that He gives me a husband just as I've always dreamed. I've been failing so much as a friend to people. I got so hurt that I just can't do it. I need some healing.

If I could I would have made different choices. If I could I would have amnesia, just so I would forget everything that I did wrongly. God's grace is amazing. I know He forgives me. But I can't forgive myself. Why did I ever let sin get into my life? How could I not win over temptation? I always step over my own values and beliefs. I can't stand up for who I am and what I believe. I want to shout NO to sin, but I don't. I've taught kids about God's power, God's love, God's will. But who am I to teach if I can't apply it to my own life?

What difference can I make in this world if I feel drowned into my mistakes. It's like a burden so heavy to carry. I feel like Christian, in that book "The Pilgrim's Progress", walking towards the Narrow Gate carrying that huge burden in his back.
